not just a game

*sorry it's been a few days, I've been sorting out my emotions...wahhhh*

As we watched the thousands of Royals fans around us celebrating their hard-fought win on Tuesday night, I couldn't help but feel a little bitter. Three days later and that sick feeling in the pit of my stomach is still lingering.

Maybe bitter isn't the right word...jealous? Definitely. Angry? Kind of. Bitter? Yeah, probably. Those fans were celebrating their team winning a big game, and I get it. They love their team, and they love the game of baseball.

But for us, this is not just a game. It's our life.

This season, Eric was on the road for 87 days (out of 183). A few times we traveled with him, but most of the time we didn't.

I traveled across country to Miami, alone with my 6 month old, so we could spend one precious "off-day" together as a family. (We took Saydee swimming in the ocean for the first time, and we'll never forget that day.)

I prayed each night for my husband's safety and health, because his body is his job, and his job is our family's livelihood.

I dealt with the heartache of holding my crying baby when she didn't recognize her dad after he came home from his third 10+ day road trip in as many months.

When the team was home, I saw my husband for a few hours in the morning, but he usually missed getting to kiss his baby goodnight.

To us, baseball is more than just a game, and no amount of money could ever replace the family memories that we are relinquishing to play it.

Those elated fans never thought about the countless hours that my husband and I have spent apart so that he could do all he could to help his team get to that very place in time. To them, it was just a game that ended in their favor. But to us, it's not just a game.

As I sit here and replay this season in my head, I feel so very blessed to have the opportunity to support my husband through this crazy life. He is living his dream, and I could not be more proud, but that doesn't mean it comes without sacrifice.

This year and this post would not be complete without a HUGE thank-you to all of those who have stuck by us and supported us unconditionally this season. We are so, so grateful for you.

Now, to you baseball, I say...laterrrzzzzz! The Sogards are done with ya...at least for a month or so before he starts training again.

We are heading home to be a family, and are so excited for all of the fun and adventure that this off-season will bring!

  4. Last night, my 4 year old asked when the A's were playing again and my husband told him their season was over. "Well, what are they going to do now?" my son asked. "Spend time with their families!" I said. Thank you for sacrificing and sharing Eric and his talent with all of us! Now go do something fun!
